Cleanup

Due to the recent visits by the spammers I decided to do a few things.

I reverted all the spam edits, I blocked the usernames for the spammers, I checked every page listed under All Articles page, and I set each page that I checked to the protection setting "Block Unregistered Users".

I realise that the default setting was the same (requiring login) but I have seen instances where the default setting was initially set that way and then later changed, opening the entire wiki to edit by people who weren't logged in.

Call me paranoid but I figured that given that I was checking each page it would only take an extra few seconds while I was there to protect the page as well.

I figure if the sysops want to change it back they can do so with a bit of SQL and a few minutes work, so it won't be inconvenient.

More Cleanup

The spammers continue to hit the site. We need to take SOME action to deal with this.

I suggest either a proper registration process with human intervention, OR a CAPTCHA systems if we persist on automatic registration. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Captcha_extensions lists a couple of possible extensions.

Futher cleanup

Just completed another full-site check for spam. ie - looked at every article and talk page. Will get to the special pages as soon as I can.

Found some which had slipped through the cracks and removed it.

The spammers were actually hitting the site while I was cleaning! :D

Spam on the increase

Due to the increase in spam - over 30 incidents in my last check (a 24 hour period), I'm blocking all spammer accounts for 6 months.

Blocking seems to be working

Now that the number of pages being spammed per day is on the decline I've done a full check of the wiki - all articles and their associated talk pages, all category pages and their associated talk pages, and all 839 user pages and their associated talk pages.

As best as I can tell - the wiki is currently clean.

I'm Baaaack

Ok - been away, am back. Have a lot of work ahead of me, but that's good too.
