Hosting
From BattletechMUX
Free BattletechMUX hosting is offered to game admins out there. This is done as a service to the community out there, and is more or less open to anyone with a good idea. Follow the steps below to obtain hosting for your game.
Contents |
What you get
- More drive space than you can use (within reason).
- 1 MySQL Database.
- Webserver (Apache2) equipped with PHP5.
- GCC4
- All required and optional libraries needed by BTMux.
- yourgame.btmux.com subdomain or a top level domain name if you have one.
Machine Specs
The server is currently as follows:
- Pentium 4, 2.4ghz
- 2 Gig RAM
- 80 Gig SATA Primary
- Debian Linux (Kernel version 2.6)
- Data-Center Quality Connection
What you don't get
- Technical support, aside from actual server problems.
- A place to stash or back up your personal files.
- Space to host material unrelated to BattletechMUX.
Step 1: Learn the Rules
We are pretty lax and loose as far as rules and limitations go. We have enough resources to the point that each game is allowed more or less whatever it needs in terms of disk space and memory. We do, however ask that a few things be upheld:
- No illegal or pornographic material may reside on our servers.
- Bandwidth consumption for each game must be kept at an acceptable level. If you need to make large files available for download, host them somewhere else and link to them.
- You are allowed one MUX process. You may not run multiple games on the server, you may not run other processes in addition to your game process.
- Sufficient activity and interest must be shown on your game or it will face review for possible removal from the server. If you are not going to make use of the space we provide, it needs to be re-allocated to someone who will.
Step 2: Get a Game Plan
If you haven't actually started on your game yet, the first thing you need to do is get a game plan together. Even if you have started on your game, you must have a design document put together outlining things like:
- What kind of gameplay you're aiming for.
- A rough overview of the way your site will work.
- A brief overview of the economy.
- Any additional notes/scribblings.
The reason we do this is we want to make sure that admins spend time thinking and mapping out their site. It is obvious that plans can change at a moment's notice and it may be hard to outline every little detail, but we'd like to see that the effort is there.
Once you have your game's design document put together, send it to gtaylor@clemson.edu.
Step 3: Moving In
Your game's design document will be reviewd and if it is accepted, your account will be created and the information you need to get started will arrive in your inbox.
In Closing
Our server is graciously hosted by Power_Shaper@Frontier. The hardware has also been provided by him, as well as the players of Battletech: The Frontier Lands.
